"Don't fear the ink" is what I tell my students and myself whenever we are working on writing. It took me 20+ years in school to realize that the teacher's ink in the margins of my papers wasn't evidence that I was "doing it wrong." The realization was relieving and infuriating -- especially when I realized I got through classes with decent grades, but didn't get enough feedback to improve my writing.
Instead of getting stuck on, "How did I get through high school and college without learning this?" - I'm putting my energy into helping my social sciences students learn these lesson before they graduate college. Fingers crossed.
